Who would have thought a donkey could teach us some valuable lessons?

One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally he decided the animal was old and the well needed to be covered up anyway, it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey.

He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement, he quieted down.A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well and was astonished at what he saw.

With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up.As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off!

Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a stepping-stone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up!

Remember the five simple rules to be happy:
Free your heart from hatred
Free your mind from worries
Live simply
Give more
Expect less

The Paradoxical Commandments

First heard about this at a workshop by Dr Kent. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Couldn't really think of a title for this post so I decided to leave it blank at first. Then I thought this might be quite appropriate.

One of my colleagues sent us an email about a man named Nick Vujicic. I visited the website to find out more. Here's the link.

http://www.gospelforafrica.eu/Verschiedenes/English/Nick%20Vujicic/Vujicic%20Nick.htm

Most of us go about our daily activities on two feet, worry about what shoes we should match with which bag etc. But after reading about Nick, I thought " what fools we have been".

I watched Evan Almighty a few weeks ago. Evan was instructed to build an ark by God. The reply he gave God was " I have made so many plans. Building an ark is not one of them." God laughs and says " YOU have made plans?"

If only we could leave it all up to Him and trust that He knows what's best for us and stick with His plan, we might spend more time living and less time worrying, don't you think?

" Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?" Matthew 6: 25-27

Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://devisblog.blogspot.com/2007/09/therefore-do-not-worry-about-tomorrow.html' title='Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. I wasn't the type who could fit in a new environment with ease. So I had to be coaxed to go to class. My first memories of school are of me screaming my lungs out and even throwing up from all the crying.... My teacher was very patient with me then. I am grateful to her for making me feel like I want to go back to school that day. During Hari Raya, she even invited all of us to her house which was just 1 block away from the kindergarten.

Sadly, I don't recall her name now. Nevertheless, I will never forget her kindness and encouraging words. She helped me to learn not only English and Maths, but also Malay. To everyone's surprise (mine as well), I came in first in my cohort at K2.

Thank You Teacher!

A Tribute to Teachers

Akan Datang (Coming Soon)!

Teachers who made a difference in my life....

The Little Joys in Life

Wanting to see the spectacular firework display, I drove down to the Esplanade on Friday night, only to return disappointed due to the traffic and the sheer number of people. (well not entirely). Well, I opened the door by pressing the button on my remote key and shook my finger to get the feeling back in it. After a few steps, I noticed a few drops of red liquid, so I casually turned my finger to look at it one more time. Yes, you guessed it, it was bleeding very badly.

I rushed to the school sick bay just like all the kids do when they get hurt while playing. Thankfully, a fellow teacher who didn't freak out at the sight of blood (like I would have) helped to do the necessary.

With a handyplast around my index finger I rushed to conduct two whole hours of supplementary, all the time wishing I could just break down and cry just like a kid. Must say, my pain threshold is pretty good.

It was't until later that night that I discovered that I had actually fractured my bone. The busiest people I have known in my life always have time enough to do everything. Those who do nothing are always tired and pay no attention to the little amount of work they are required to do. They complain constantly that the day is too short..."

" The second symptom of the death of our dreams lies in our certainties. Because we don't want to see life as a grand adventure, we begin to think of ourselves as wise and fair and correct in asking so little of life."

" And finally, the third symptom of the passing of our dreams is peace. Life becomes a Sunday afternoon, we ask for nothing grand, and we cease to demand anything more than we are willing to give. All the while, I had always seen her as a strict disciplinarian who would put up with no rubbish from us. But somehow, that poem changed my impression about her.

Probably, it was due to exam stress, but to me the poem was God sent. It was like He was shining the light of hope from above.

Well here's the poem. It's seems rather long, but it's worth the time spent reading it.

Dont' Quit

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,

When the road you're trudging seems all up hill,

When the funds are low and the debts are high,

And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,

When care is pressing you down a bit,

Rest! if you must; but don't you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,

As everyone of us sometimes learns,

And many a failure turns about

When he might have won had he stuck it out;

Don't give up, though the pace seems slow;

You might succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than

It seems to a faint and faltering man,

Often the struggler has given up

When he might have captured the victor's cup.

And he learned too late, when the night slipped down,

How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out;

The silver tint of the clouds of doubt;

And you never can tell how close you are,

It may be near when it seems afar;

So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit; My favourite scene was the last one where Chris Gardner feels happy at having finally got the job after 6 months of practically living on the streets, you have to see the movie to understand..

At that moment, a question hung over my head... When was I that happy? What made me as happy as he was in that last scene?

To my surprise, my thoughts raced to the many moments when I had been really happy.. (of course, I'm not going to reveal all those moments on my blog, de?)

Another shocking revelation was that I had not thought about those happy moments more than once maybe twice in all these years. On the other hand, the not so happy moments were etched in my memory only to appear as constant reminders of my misfortunes..

Well, here are a couple of quotes I found on the internet,

"The pursuit of happiness is a most ridiculous phrase: if you pursue happiness you'll never find it." ~ C.P. Snow

"God has made all men to be happy." Epictetus (c. 50 - 120)

So what makes me happy? Here's a short list..

the smiles and looks of joy on the faces of people I care most about

seeing places I had only read about in books

being at places built thousands of years ago..

excitement on the faces of kids in class/or during excursions

Well, I've written enough to bore everyone... Here are some pictures of places that I felt really happy to be at...

Fathers are Wonderful People, really

As Father's day is approaching, I though it would be nice to post something related to that.

My dad is quite similar to most Asian dads, he leaves all the talking and disciplining to my mum (so she gets the reputation of being the big bad wolf). He worked hard to provide for us when we were young and still works now to keep himself busy. I can't remember how we spent father's day when we were younger or the gifts we had given then. Most of the time it will be something like a shirt, wallet or belt etc.

Sometimes I wish, my dad could be more like those TV dads and I could reach out and give him a big hug and say I love you, but I think he would think I had gone crazy or something..

Well, enough about my dad. Here's a poem about dads. Maybe some of you could relate to this too, just like I can.

Fathers are Wonderful People

Fathers are wonderful people too little understood
And we do not sing their praises as often as we should...

And father works daily to live up to "His Image"
As protector and provider and "hero of the scrimmage"...

And perhaps that is the reason we sometimes get the notion
that fathers are not subject to things we call emotion

But if you look inside Dad's heart, where no one else can see,
You'll find he's sentimental and as soft as he can be...

But he's busy everyday in the daily race of life.
But Fathers are just wonderful in a million different ways,
And they deserve all the loving compliments and praises.

For the only reason Dad aspires to fortune and success,
Is to make the family proud of him and to bring them happiness...

A father, he's a guardian and a guide.
Someone that we can count on to be always on our side.

What's blogging all about anyway?

A "blog"

is a portmanteau of the words web and log (Web log).

is a website where entries are written in chronological order and displayed in reverse chronological order.

combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic

allows anyone from Presidents to Pre-schoolers to Homeless to publish information on the internet

allows readers to leave comments

Why is it good to blog?

very simple and can be created with ease

helps to connect with many people anywhere in the world

good for students to improve their writing skills (if they use the grammatically correct language, that is)

Why can blogs be bad?

No credibility (basically, you need not believe any of the stuff that is written in blogs, they could all be cooked up)

Can be used for wrong purposes (eg. As such, it might be a good idea not to put up all of ones deep, dark secrets, right?
For now, it just seems like the "in" thing, so why not blog..

"Our opinions do not really blossom into fruition until we have expressed them to someone else. Well, the next time we eat "chilli crab" we could spend a few seconds thinking about all these magnificent crabs out there in the oceans as a mark of respect, come on, these creatures have been around since prehistoric times. It is the most exquisite thing I have ever seen. My Honda, of course, pales in comparison.

I spent some time googling to get some information on this magnficent "creature". Here's what I got..

Basically, Lamborghini seems to be the brain child of a man named Ferruccio Lamborghini (quite obviously). He probably designed the first of these creatures, the 350GTV in 1963. Following that, there had been many Lamborghinis designed by world famous designers.

More recently, the Lamborghini Gallardo (like in that Akon song) series was introduced ..

purity

athleticism

sharpness

"Every new Lamborghini which is coming out is a new car. It is not an evolution, it is a revolution." ~
Stephan Winkelmann - CEO (Lamborghini)

Well, you have to see it to believe it, but to drive it you'll need about $700 to $800 THOUSAND... and a country road with no speed limits.

For those Lamborghini fanatics out there, all is not lost, you could still make do with a 1: 64 model of the car or you can get one of these . They cost about $5 thousand ...

"Emo" --- What is that?

After hearing and seeing this word "emo" in a lot of places and from students, I decided to explore a little into the word.

Lots of interpretations...

The gist of it is that "emo" actually relates to some sort of 80's punk rock music or something like that. However, punk rock seems to have evolved and exists in some form even now...

Interestingly, there are other definitions to this " emo" thingy one of which is related to a perculiar group of teenagers.
